Groups skills classes are generally offered in 8 or 9 week modules. Classes sizes range between four and eight group members and are open to adults 18 years old and up. Classes are currently being offered via Zoom. Classes are didactic in nature, usually have a short mindfulness exercise included and focuses on one or two DBT skills in each session.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness skills in DBT come from the eastern spiritual traditions. These skills help members focus on the present and attend to what is happening in the here and now in a calm way. It helps people slow down and focus on doing what is needed to care for oneself in the moment. Members learn the value of wise mind instead of succumbing to intense emotions and acting in a destructive way.
Distress Tolerance
Distress tolerance helps people get through difficult times when emotions are running high. It teaches people to soothe themselves in healthy ways when they are feeling upset rather than becoming overwhelmed by emotions or hiding from them. This allows individuals to make wise decisions about whether and how to take action, rather than falling into the intense, desperate and often-destructive emotional reactions. Crisis survival skills are also taught so that one does not engage in problematic behaviors and ultimately make the situation worse. Reality Acceptance Skills focus on helping people fully accept reality and provide a guideline for responding to painful aspects of life.
Emotion Regulation
Emotion regulation skills teach individuals how to understand, identify, and modulate their emotional responses. This module helps clients reduce emotional vulnerability by increasing positive emotional experiences and managing negative ones. It is particularly helpful for those who experience mood swings, emotional instability, or difficulty controlling emotions. Learning these skills enables clients to build a more stable emotional foundation and improve their overall mental well-being.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Interpersonal effectiveness focuses on improving communication and relationship-building skills. It helps clients navigate social interactions with confidence, assertiveness, and respect for both their own needs and the needs of others. This module is beneficial for anyone struggling with relationship conflicts, boundary-setting, or self-advocacy. By enhancing these skills, clients can create healthier, more fulfilling relationships both personally and professionally.
